A deep cleaning programme for hotels
A hotel deep cleaning programme takes rooms and public areas out of service in a planned rotation, a few at a time, so every space gets a full clean on a fixed cycle without lost room nights. It is built from the occupancy forecast, covers what daily housekeeping cannot reach, and records each room as it is signed off.

| Area | Example cycle | Best window | Main deep clean tasks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guest rooms and suites | Each room two to four times a year | Low occupancy days, by floor or wing | Carpet, upholstery, curtains, mattress, bathroom descale, AC grilles, high dusting |
| Guest corridors and lift lobbies | Monthly to quarterly | Late morning, after departures | Carpet extraction, wall and door washing, skirting, light fittings |
| Lobby and reception | Monthly, on top of nightly floor care | Overnight | Stone floor care, upholstery, glass, high level dusting |
| Restaurants and bars | Monthly | Between services or after close | Chair and banquette upholstery, carpet, under fixed seating |
| Banqueting and meeting rooms | Between event blocks | Dark days in the events diary | Carpet, stacking chairs, wall panels, partitions, stores |
| Spa, gym and pool surrounds | Monthly | Before opening or after closing | Tile and grout descaling, drains, lockers, ventilation grilles |
| Back of house | Quarterly | Agreed with each department | Service corridors, staff areas, linen rooms, loading bay |
What is a hotel deep cleaning programme?
Daily housekeeping resets a room for the next guest: linen, bathroom, surfaces, floor. It works against the clock and cannot move the bed, wash the curtains or descale the shower. A deep cleaning programme is the planned layer on top. Every room and area is taken in turn, cleaned to a written scope, inspected and returned, and the cycle then starts again.
The word rolling matters. Closing a floor for a week once a year leaves rooms eleven months from their last deep clean by the end of the cycle. A rolling programme takes a small block every week, so no room is ever far from its last visit and the workload is steady enough to staff.
How is the programme planned around occupancy?
Planning starts with the revenue forecast, not the cleaning calendar. Rooms are blocked out of sale for the day only when the house can spare them.
- The executive housekeeper and front office agree how many rooms can be released on each day of the week. The quiet days differ between a leisure hotel and a business hotel, so the pattern is taken from the forecast and not assumed.
- Rooms are grouped by floor or wing, so machines, hoses and noise stay in one place and the lift is not tied up.
- Connecting rooms and suites are scheduled when they are least likely to be sold together.
- Each room is released after check out, cleaned through the day and handed back before the evening, with drying time for carpet and upholstery built in. Rooms that need longer are blocked overnight.
- In Dubai the summer months are quieter for many hotels, and that is when whole floors, heavy curtain cleaning and stone restoration are fitted in. Ramadan shifts restaurant and banqueting windows and is planned separately.
- The plan is reviewed weekly. When a group booking fills the house, the block is moved to another date and not dropped.
What does a guest room deep clean cover?
The scope is agreed in writing, room type by room type. A usual list looks like this.
- Furniture moved out from the walls, with the bed base lifted and the floor beneath vacuumed and cleaned.
- Carpet cleaned by hot water extraction, or hard floors machine scrubbed with the grout lines cleaned.
- Mattress vacuumed on both faces, treated, and turned or rotated as its label directs.
- Sofa, armchair, headboard and desk chair upholstery cleaned.
- Curtains and sheers cleaned on the track, or taken down and replaced with a spare set. Blackout linings checked for mould along the glass edge.
- High dusting of pelmets, wardrobe tops, picture rails, light fittings and the surrounds of sprinklers and detectors, without disturbing the devices.
- AC supply and return grilles removed where possible and washed, with the filter condition reported to engineering.
- Bathroom descaled. Dubai water is hard, and shower glass, tap bases, shower heads and drain covers carry limescale that the daily clean only holds back.
- Extract grille, behind the toilet, under the vanity and inside the bath panel cleaned.
- Balcony floor, railing glass, door tracks and outdoor furniture washed.
- Walls, doors, switches, handles, the minibar cabinet and the inside of every drawer and wardrobe wiped.
Defects found along the way, such as failed sealant, a loose tile or a stained ceiling, are listed for engineering so that the room goes back into service with both jobs done.
How are public areas and back of house handled?
Public areas never close, so the work moves to the hours when they are emptiest. Lobby stone is machine cleaned overnight with wet floor barriers out and a dry path kept open to the lifts and the desk. Upholstery in the lounge is done in sections so that seating is always available, and it has to be dry before breakfast.
Restaurants are cleaned after the last cover. Banquettes, carpet edges under fixed seating and the floor beneath service stations get the attention that a nightly sweep misses. Ballrooms and meeting rooms are fitted into dark days in the events diary. Spa and pool wet areas are descaled before opening, with the ventilation running so that the smell of the product has cleared before guests arrive.
Back of house matters as much as the front. Service corridors, linen rooms and staff changing rooms feed dust and odour into guest floors when they are neglected.
How is the work checked and recorded?
Each room has a checklist that the supervisor signs before it is released. Housekeeping then inspects it and returns it to front office as available. Photographs before and after give the hotel a record for brand audits and for owners.
A simple tracker by room number shows the date of the last deep clean, what was done and what was reported. It exposes the rooms that keep being skipped because they are always sold, which are usually the best ones.
The MELLS works to the standards of the hotel and its brand, supplies a directly employed team under one supervisor, and adapts the weekly block to the forecast that housekeeping shares.
Common questions
Does a deep cleaning programme replace daily housekeeping?
No. It sits alongside it. Room attendants keep their daily routine, and the deep clean team takes the tasks that need machines, extra time or furniture to be moved.
Can a room be deep cleaned and sold the same night?
Often, if it is released early and the carpet and upholstery have time to dry. Rooms with heavy staining, curtain removal or odour treatment are usually blocked for the night.
Is the work done by hotel staff or an outside team?
Either, or both. Many hotels keep high dusting and bathroom descaling in house and bring in a contractor for carpets, upholstery, curtains, mattresses and stone, which need specialist machines.
How is noise kept away from guests?
By working one floor or wing at a time during late morning and early afternoon, keeping machines inside the room with the door closed, and leaving rooms next to late sleepers or long stay guests to another day.
How many rooms are taken each week?
That is set by the size of the hotel, the cycle it wants and the forecast. The number is agreed with housekeeping and front office and changes from week to week.
