How often should a sofa be cleaned in Dubai?
Vacuum a sofa every week and have it deep cleaned every 6 to 12 months. Homes with children, pets or dust allergy, or a sofa beside a balcony door, should shorten that to every 3 to 4 months. Leather is wiped weekly and conditioned two to four times a year, because air conditioning dries it out.

| Household or sofa | Vacuum | Deep clean | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Couple, no pets, sofa used in the evenings | Weekly | Once a year | Dust and body oil build up slowly |
| Family with young children | Twice a week | Every 4 to 6 months | Food, drink and sticky hands |
| Home with cats or dogs | Twice a week | Every 3 to 4 months | Hair, dander and odour settle in the cushions |
| Someone with dust allergy or asthma | Twice a week with a HEPA vacuum | Every 3 to 4 months | Fine dust and mite debris sit in the weave |
| Light coloured fabric or velvet | Weekly | Every 6 months | Soiling on arms and headrests shows early |
| Leather sofa | Dry cloth weekly | Clean and condition 2 to 4 times a year | Cooled air dries the hide and body oil darkens it |
| Majlis or formal seating | Before and after gatherings | Once a year, or after a large event | Used rarely, but by many people at once |
How often does a sofa need cleaning?
A sofa in daily use needs two kinds of attention. The first is a weekly vacuum, which takes ten minutes and removes dust, crumbs and hair before they are pressed into the weave. The second is a deep clean with water and extraction, which most households need once or twice a year.
The right interval depends on who sits on it. A couple who use the sofa in the evenings can leave a year between deep cleans. A family with small children, a dog that sleeps on the cushions, or someone with a dust allergy should plan on every three to four months. Light fabrics show soiling on the arms and headrests long before the seat looks dirty, so judge by those areas.
Leather follows a different routine. It does not hold dust the way fabric does, but it takes up body oil and dries out, so it is wiped weekly and then cleaned and conditioned two to four times a year.
Why do sofas get dirty faster in Dubai?
Fine sand is the main reason. It comes in through balcony doors and window seals and on clothes, and it is light enough to stay in the air until the AC pushes it down onto soft furnishings. The grains are sharp. Worked into a fabric by people sitting down and getting up, they cut the fibres and leave the seat cushions flat and grey.
Summer adds to it. For several months people spend most of the day indoors, so the sofa is used for more hours, and skin carries sweat and sunscreen onto the arms and backs. Windows stay shut, which means cooking vapour and dust travel round the same rooms and never leave the house.
Humidity matters when a home is closed up. A sofa left for weeks with the AC switched off takes up moisture from the air, and a musty smell or grey mildew spots on the underside are common after a long summer absence.
What can I do myself between deep cleans?
- Vacuum every week with the upholstery tool, including under and behind the seat cushions and along the piping.
- Turn and swap loose cushions once a month so that wear and fading are shared.
- Blot a spill at once with a white cotton cloth, pressing down and working from the edge towards the middle. Do not rub.
- Read the care label before putting any liquid on the fabric. W means water based cleaners are safe, S means solvent only, WS means either, and X means vacuum only.
- Test any cleaner on a hidden patch, such as the back of the skirt, and wait for it to dry before using it where it shows.
- Wipe leather with a dry microfibre cloth weekly and a barely damp one monthly. Keep baby wipes and kitchen sprays off it, because they strip the finish.
- Draw the blinds on windows that put direct sun on the sofa. Fabric fades and leather cracks along the sunlit edge first.
Two habits do more harm than good. Soaking a cushion to chase a stain pushes the dirt into the foam, where it wicks back up as a brown ring. Bleach and strong household cleaners take the colour out along with the mark.
How is a sofa cleaned professionally?
The work starts with identification: the fibre, the care code, any colour that might run, and the stains worth pointing out before anything is wet. A dry pass with a HEPA vacuum comes next and matters more than people expect, because sand that is not removed dry turns to mud once water is added.
A cleaning solution matched to the fabric is then sprayed on and worked in with a soft horsehair brush, and hot water extraction rinses it out and vacuums the soiled water away in the same stroke. Delicate weaves, velvet and viscose get a low moisture method with foam and a towel. Spots are treated one by one according to what caused them, since grease, ink and coffee each need a different product.
Drying is part of the job. With air movers and the AC running, most fabric sofas are dry in four to eight hours. Leather is cleaned by hand with a pH neutral leather cleaner and a soft brush, wiped off, and fed with conditioner once the surface is dry.
When should I call a professional straight away?
- A drink or other liquid has soaked through the cover into the foam.
- A pet or a child has had an accident on the cushions. Urine that dries in the filling keeps smelling until it is flushed out.
- A home attempt has left a tide mark or a stiff, sticky patch.
- There is mildew or a damp smell after the home has been closed.
- The fabric is silk, velvet, viscose or linen, or the label carries an S or an X.
The MELLS inspects the sofa on a site visit, confirms the method and the scope in a written quotation, and a supervisor checks the result against photographs taken before the work.
Common questions
How long does a sofa take to dry after cleaning?
Usually four to eight hours with the AC on and air moving across it. Thick cushions and humid days take longer. Sit on it only when the fabric feels dry right through, and stand the cushions on their edges until then.
Can every sofa fabric be cleaned with water?
No. Cotton, polyester and most blends accept hot water extraction. Silk, viscose, some velvets and certain linens mark or shrink when wet and need a solvent or low moisture method. The care label and a test on a hidden area decide it.
Will cleaning take out every stain?
Not always. Fresh food, drink and body oil generally come out well. Ink, dye transfer from jeans, old pet stains and sun fading may only lighten. An honest cleaner tells you which marks are likely to stay before starting.
Should the sofa or the carpet be cleaned first?
The sofa first, or both on the same visit. Soil rinsed from upholstery can drip onto the floor below, so the carpet under and around it is done afterwards.
Is a fabric protector worth having?
On light fabrics in a family room it helps. A protector makes liquid sit on the surface for longer, which buys time to blot. It wears off with use and has to be applied again after each deep clean.
